The Man of Sorrows

Wood, polychrome
Frauenkirche, Munich, Germany

Usually, but not always, the Man of Sorrows stands behind or inside a sarcophagus, and it is the Ecce Homo that has him standing in pain and anguish. But an Ecce Homo image pictures Jesus as he was shown to the crowd by Pilate, before he experienced the five wounds suffered on the cross. This is therefore a rare example of a Man of Sorrows without the sarcophagus.
